Product Tips: Exporting SureSync Log Records for Long-Term Storage

In some environments, it is important to keep a record of all of the actions performed by SureSync for longer periods of time than what is stored in the database. By default, SureSync stores 14 days of logs. Log entries that get older than that are purged from the database. You can increase the number of days logs are stored by launching the SureSync Desktop, clicking on the Options button in the Ribbon Bar and changing the “Purge log entries and Alerts older than” option to a higher number. The more days of logs you store in the database, the larger the database will become.

For long-term storage, the SureSync Log Viewer has an option to export logs into tab separated text documents. These files can easily be opened in Excel. To take advantage of the export function, launch the SureSync Log Viewer and click on the “Export Logs” button in the Ribbon Bar.

The panel that loads will give you a number of export options:

  • Export only new records that were not previously exported: This is the default option and will export all logs in the database that have not already been exported. You can run this on a regular interval to get all new logs since the last export date.
  • Export only the currently selected job: Exports only the currently displayed log.
  • Export all records: Exports all logs stored in the database.
  • Delete records from the database after they have been exported: If this option is selected, logs are deleted from the database once the export is complete.

To further automate the storage process, you could export into a folder that is the source of a SureSync mirror. SureSync would then copy the logs to a destination of your choosing next time the Job executed.

The Log Viewer’s export options give you an easy option to address the need for long-term storage of log file information. If you have questions about this functionality, please contact our support team.
