In SureSync v8, the Alerts system has been significantly enhanced, making it the leading file synchronization software on the market. E-mail alerts are only one component of the new alert system and understanding how to use the new alerts system can make monitoring your SureSync environment quicker and easier.
E-mail Alert Enhancements
In previous SureSync versions, an alert level was selected for a particular Schedule or Real-Time Monitor, and alerts matching that level could be sent to one or more e-mail addresses. Flexibility was limited.
In v8, e-mail alerts have been enhanced to provide:
-
The ability to send alerts on individual Jobs.
-
System-wide alerts are defined in Options that easily allow an administrator to receive a defined level of alerts for every Job, Schedule, and Real-Time Monitor in the database.
-
Alert profiles that allow you to decide what alerts a particular administrator receives. For example, instead of being notified every time a path drops and is recovered, you can be notified only if a path is offline for 15 minutes. This is useful in environments with known connectivity issues where you only want to be alerted to major outages.
-
Multiple alert profiles can be defined on one Job, Schedule or Real-Time Monitor. For example, notify one administrator of a path being offline for 10 minutes and a larger group if it’s offline for 20 minutes.
Processing Alerts & Triggering Retries
Alerts are created and saved in the SureSync database. Similar to log viewer entries, these alerts are automatically removed from the database over time based on the defined retention period in the Options settings. Using file replication software with advanced alert features ensures you stay informed and in control of your data replication processes.
When an alert occurs that matches an e-mail alert filter, an e-mail alert will be sent. In addition, an administrator can mark alerts resolved or trigger a retry of an action using the Enterprise Status Panel. In the Enterprise Status panel, you will see an “Alerts” column as highlighted below.
From an alert stored in the database, you have the powerful ability to retry a single action or group of actions. Assume a Real-Time Monitor encountered an “access denied” on a file due to a user incorrectly changing permissions. Instead of needing to rescan after correcting the permission, you can now retry the alert for the single file. This quickly and efficiently resolves the issue!
To process alerts, select the relevant Schedule or Real-Time Monitor in Enterprise Status. Click on the “Alerts” button on the Ribbon Bar. From there, search for relevant alerts using the filters. Checking “Retry” or “Resolve” as appropriate for the alerts and then clicking “Perform Requested Actions” will process the alerts.
The alert enhancements in SureSync v8 help administrators easily stay on top of the current status of the SureSync environment and simplify the process of addressing warnings and errors. Implementing a robust dfs alternative like SureSync can ensure your data remains up-to-date and accessible during disaster recovery scenarios.
