Protecting File Shares with MigratePro

MigratePro’s powerful migration engine can be used to move file shares from old to new hardware with ease. With MigratePro, you know that all of your file shares, data, share settings, local users, local groups and other settings are maintained on the new hardware. However, a network administrator’s responsibility does not end with the migration of the data to a new machine. This data must be protected against accidental deletion and other forms of data loss.

Traditionally, tape backups are used to protect file data. The problem with tape backup is that the backup process can be time consuming and is generally run once a day. There is no situation worse than attempting to restore a file just to find it never made it to tape. MigratePro can compliment your tape backups by copying your file shares, data and all related settings to a second machine many times during the day. The rules included in the MigratePro product do not delete files on the destination when they are deleted from the source which makes it perfect for this type of backup protection.

Scheduling a MigratePro Relation

In a large percentage of scenarios, MigratePro Relations are run manually at the time the administrator wants to perform the migration. For example, the administrator might launch a migration job at 8PM on a Friday night when no one is using the system. This isn’t the only way that the MigratePro Relations can be run. You can also configure MigratePro to run a job on a scheduled basis. For example, you might run the job once an hour or every four hours. When the job runs, it will copy any changed files to the destination machine. You can also configure it to copy security and other settings when they change.

This scheduled run of a MigratePro Relation can protect changed files on a file share between tape backup runs while maintaining the share settings on the destination machine. An administrator can quickly retrieve a file by going to the shares stored on the backup machine and simply copying it with Windows Explorer back to the source. Compared to a tape restore process, this is much faster. Running MigratePro in this manner can help eliminate gaps in your backup coverage and help ensure that files are protected.

Advanced Open File Support

What about files which are held open by a user? MigratePro addresses this problem as well by including Advanced Open File Support. This allows MigratePro to copy files which are held open exclusive or locked by another user, ensuring that those files are protected during the day. Advanced Open File Support is provided free of charge in Windows 2003 and newer or as an affordable Add-on license for Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Conclusion

MigratePro is not a single use utility. The program can be used to perform migrations of complex file share structures to new hardware with ease but the usefulness of the application doesn’t stop there. MigratePro can also be used to ensure that your data is protected during the day while your tape backups aren’t running.

SureSync Tip - Optimize Performance through Installation

SureSync performance can be optimized by ensuring proper placement of SureSync machines. For example, if your company has an office in the United States and one in Europe the performance can be optimized by having the United States source machine synchronize all the machines in the United States and one machine in Europe. The one machine in Europe would also have SureSync installed and control the synchronization to the other machines in Europe. The end result is a single synchronization over the WAN instead of transferring files to multiple machines that way. See the “Placement of SureSync Machines” topic in the help file for more information.
